Can I run this game on my computer?

We’ve built this game so that it will run on virtually any system and we are currently optimizing the game to run on even a $200 netbook.  So long as you have an internet connection and a browser, we want you to be able to play our games.  Since we’re still in alpha state, the game is not yet completely optimized for all systems.  It does not work for all users on linux at this time, but we are working as hard as we can on making sure that the playing experience is equal across all operating systems.  We also recommend that you play on a system with 1GB of RAM and have at least 500MB in your internet browser’s cache.

What if I can’t connect?

Some of our users have reported problems with connecting to City of Eternals due to their firewall settings, so we’re working on getting the game up and running on port 80 (http/web traffic) as quick as we can!  Until then if you you know how to work with your firewall, you can open it up on port TCP 3200 to ensure a connection.  If you’re still having problems, please post your issue here.

How do I get started?

How do I get around in New Valencia?

New City of Eternals user interfaceWhat’s the point of this game, anyway?

City of Eternals is a multiplayer online gameworld (sometimes called an MMO) where you complete missions and adventure to become the ultimate vampire. You can achieve that in many ways, including: defeating monsters and other vampires in combat, harvesting raw materials and crafting precious items, and completing mission adventures in New Valencia. (To start a mission, click on game characters with a scroll and “!” above their heads.) The more you perform these activities, the more powerful your vampire becomes. You can also customize your clothing and home, and meet fellow City of Eternal players from around the world. You can even create your own vampire House by turning your friends into Minions who do your bidding! (And that’s just the start.)

chat1How do I talk to other players?

By using the handy chat window! It can be a little daunting at first, but with a little use you’ll be an expert in no time. You can just click to type in the area, but if you want to direct your text to the right groups, you’ll have to use the chat channels. The channels are:

Area (blue): this is the default channel and will message everyone on your current map (like Downtown New Valencia)
Trade(orange): use this channel to sell items you no longer need or buy items you see other players offering.
Group(purple): if you are in a group, you can use this channel to speak only to your group members
World(gray): this will broadcast to everyone in the game, so use it sparingly!
Private(magenta): this is the private message channel, these messages go only from a specific user to you or from you to a specific user

chat channelsYou can check or uncheck the channels you do or do not want to see on the right, and choose the channel you want to chat in at the bottom. whisper doneIf you want to send a private message to a player, you can either click on them in the game and click the “Send a Message” button or click on the little arrow next to their messages in the chat window. After that, just type your message in the “Whisper” box and hit enter or “Send!” You’ll see it appear in magenta in the box so that you know it went through.

houseHow can I change my Vampire House?

Just click on the shield at the top of the screen! You’ll be offered a choice of the four houses and the rebel White Crows. Don’t worry though! You’ll be able to change your mind in case you make the wrong decision. If you’re not sure which house is for you, why not read up on them here?

Where can I get new stuff for my home?

Why VIKEA of course! Just click on the “Buy New Stuff” button in your Housing Menu or head down to the Commercial District and look for the sign! And if you’re not exactly sure how to go about decorating, this guide is here to help!

What’s that bar at the bottom of my screen?

That’s the leaderboard! It tracks the Prestige of New Valencia’s Greatest. Prestige is a number that rates your overall awesomeness as a vampire as broken down by four different characteristics:

Knowledge: Explore, craft, harvest! Whether you’re finding, gathering or making, you’re increasing your prestige.
Fighting:
Kill ‘em all and let the undertaker sort ‘em out. Fighting enemies, gaining fighter levels, if it’s aggressive, you’ll get prestige.
Style:
You can’t be prestigious if you don’t look good. Make yourself the envy of your friends with the hottest threads and the choicest home objects!
Minions:
Build an army of your friends! The more minions you have and tasks you complete, the higher you’ll rise!

Remember, though, the board only shows your score against your Facebook friends so if you want to see how you stack up against someone else, you’ll have to friend them first!

NonameWhy am I sparkling?

Well, congratulations! You just gained a Prestige level! Every time you do, you let everyone know about your new awesomeness with a bit of bling. Enjoy it! It won’t last long and you’ll have to wait for another whole prestige level till you get to shine again!

ohaisWhat are ohais?

ohais are the most precious currency in City of Eternals, used to purchase valuable items. They can be earned through various activities or bought with real cash. You can easily purchase them by clicking on the ohai icon in the game, choosing the amount, and following the rest of the instructions!

Privacy Settings in FacebookCan I control my Facebook profile in the game?

Yes. Our overall policy is that we default to your Facebook’s privacy settings. So if you decide to set your settings in Facebook so that no one can see your photo, we will not show your photo in game. If you decide to set your settings in Facebook so that no one can add you as a friend, we will not present that option in game.

What do all the different clothing color names mean?

Here is a handy chart!

How can I get more inventory slots?

Bags are extremely rare, but you can purchase them from certain merchants with ohais or win them in very special mission and events. Keep playing and searching and you’ll find them! But remember, you can only have a total of four bags. After that, the bag with the least slots will appear in your inventory so that you can sell or trade it!

What do the equipment text colors mean?

Equipment text colors let you know how rare an item is.  In order of rarity (most rare to common) they are: orange, purple, blue, green, white, and gray.

City of Eternals Zone instancingWhat are zones, and what happens when I move between them?

Zones are different sections of the game world, usually demarcated with big directional arrows. Sometimes when you enter a zone, it will ask you for what instance (or version) you want to enter. (See picture.) This happens when the zone becomes too crowded; a new copy is automatically created to accommodate more players. There’s no functional difference between the different zone copies, except the players in them. However, the game system tries to place you in zones shared by your group members, or where your Facebook friends are located.

If I join City of Eternals, will it Spam all my Facebook friends with automatic messages?

We have a policy of giving users control over their experiences. So we will allow you to decide when you want to post notifications or send invites to your friends. We won’t be sending out automated messages to your friends without your consent.

Will I be able to connect to City of Eternals through social networks other than Facebook?

Coming soon, you’ll also be able to log into City of Eternals via your Twitter account. Further down the road, it will be possible to embed City of Eternals on other social networks and web pages, just as you would a Flash video.

How do you guys make money from City of Eternals, anyway?

City of Eternals is free to play with virtual currency sales for items and services in game. (The currency is called Ohais — more details on that soon.) There will also be some advertising and sponsorships.

How much fresh content will City of Eternals have?

We are already changing our areas on a daily basis and adding new missions every week. That’s the beauty of running a gaming platform that has been designed from the ground up to be web services enabled. We’ll be adding new stories every week!

Why aren’t the graphics as good as big budget console and PC games?

We definitely aren’t going to be as gorgeous as Halo 3 or World of Warcraft or any other fully rendered 3d game. But we believe that frictionless gameplay, fast environments, and social engagement are even more important than super high end graphics. That’s why we are on Flash and why we decided to start a web gaming company rather than do another large scale, billion dollar, full client franchise.

What do I do if my question isn’t covered here?

Ask one of our players! We have a great community of higher level players now and most of them would be more than happy to help you out if you’re not sure what to do. Just politely chat your question and you’ll have help in no time! If that doesn’t work, look forMatt, the Online Community Manager. He usually hangs out in Downtown New Valencia (currently in a stylish blood red trenchcoat) and love any chance to help out our players. Even if you don’t have any questions, feel free to say hi anyway!
